It’s a lovely board, with a big, semi-circular expanse, but although a nice design, it’s a little impractical. Ambiguous characters are few and far between in the movies, the motivations always dogmatically light/dark, so having a game that focuses on the mercenaries, raiders and smugglers instant piqued my interest. So really, the greys became the interesting thing. He was definitely not – despite his costume – a black/white character. The first Star Wars Movie, (called ‘Star Wars’ when I saw it one of this ‘episode IV’ malarky) began to drag until the arrival of Han Solo. Everything is always Sith vs Jedi/Republic vs Empire/ Black Hats vs White hats, and you know, that’s okay as far as it goes. With Star Wars being such a rich universe, it annoys me that so few characters get to stand in the spotlight. So, all that out of the way, we arrive at Fantasy Flights ‘Outer Rim.’ I’ve not actually played it yet and doubt I ever will. Recently I bought Star Wars: Legion, but that was mostly because I wanted to paint the figures. Everyone else got very uncomfortable with the bickering and ended up not wanting to play anymore… He and his partner had clearly fixed the game between themselves and still did nothing but bicker. In the 2000s, we tried Edge of the Empire but the DM was, not to put too fine a point on it, bloody useless. We went back for him but being armless he was such a liability we decided to eat him. There was an attempt at an RPG in the ’80s in which we pissed the GM off by accidentally blowing the arms off his Ewok (it was his fault, he held on to that bomb for far too long!) and then abandoning him when we had to do some arm over arm vine travelling. I also kind of like the early Lucas Arts X-wing/ TIE Fighter games (although not X-Wing vs Tie Fighter, oddly enough), but being so inept, my enjoyment was solely from watching my partner doing so well at it. There are pretences to story, but really it’s just HULK SMASH! I like the lack of subtlety. I think this is because both games have a strong element of blundering around and battering the crap out of stuff for no real, discernible reason. In all honesty, the only Star Wars based games that I’ve been 100% behind are Dark Forces for the PlayStation and Lego Star Wars. After the horrors of an ‘Imperial Assault’ campaign gone sour, all Star Wars-branded games are treated with caution. With having such a complicated relationship with Star Wars (you can read about that here if you really want to) playing Star Wars games can be something of a poisoned chalice.
